Moving away from traditional, human-inspired methods of building, the work explores the architectural implications of novel digital fabrication and design methods. Robotic Timber Assemblies is a multidisciplinary research project to enable a future where buildings and infrastructures can be assembled by autonomous machines. Utilizing wood, abundant, local and highly sustainable, not only as the construction material but as an integral part of the robot’s locomotion system, the new narrative merges building machine and building material to create previously unseen processes and structures. Creating ultra-lightweight yet highly tuneable materials, Kinetic Composites researches new tectonic relationships between tensile, bending active and curve crease folded systems. Digital programming of the materials exposes a new structural interplay of glass fibre membranes, rods and plates. Computational form finding methods further allow for geometries with multiple states of equilibrium and an exploration of a highly performative design space, resulting in structures that can move and adapt in response to the needs of our everchanging environment.
