Uluwatu sunset Kecak Fire Dance is a dramatic Balinese dance performed by a group of at least 50 male singers, who chant a repetitive phrase while men dress in traditional Balinese costumes swing their arms and sway their bodies to the rhythm. It is usually performed in front of the Uluwatu temple at sunset, completing the perfect sunset experience. The performance was originated in 1930, by the composer and choreographer Wayan Limbak. It is meant to tell a story about a battle between the monkey and the evil giant as well as illustrating appreciation for the ocean, mountains and spirit of nature. The performance is characterized by the deep and rhythmic "cak-cak-cak" chant uttered by the lead vocalist. The fire element of the performance is often added for extra theatrics. The whole performance is a unique and spectacular combination of music, lights and fire that visitors to the area should not miss.
Uluwatu Temple is an ancient Hindu temple complex located in the area of Pecatu, on the Bukit Peninsula of the island of Bali in Indonesia. The temple complex is said to have been established in the 11th century, making it one of the oldest temples in Bali. The temple is dedicated to the worship of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, or Lord Shiva, one of the supreme gods in Hinduism. It is one of the major nine directional directional temples of Bali, which are known as the Padma Sapta Wisnu. The walls of the Uluwatu Temple complex are intricately decorated with stone carvings.
