In Gerhard Funk's work “Color Bars” each user is assigned a color bar when entering the projection. Its hue depends on the distance to the wall, the brightness on the distance or space given to it by the neighboring users. The smaller the distance to the left and right, the darker the color bar. By walking around, different interesting color combinations can be created.
The greatest order is achieved when everyone is at the same height and at the same distance from each other. This results in a large homogeneous color area. This color experience is supported by the sound created by Christoph Frey. Each person is assigned a sound track. The more uniform the overall color impression, the more harmonious the sound, creating a deep, floating overall tone. “Color Bars” also offers a stripe and a circle mode, plus the possibility to change the color schemes or speed.
Based on the concept of Cooperative Aesthetics, developed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Funk, students of Time-based and Interactive Media Art at the University of Arts and Design Linz and Prof. Funk have created 30 artworks for the Deep Space of the Ars Electronica Center since 2015. These projects will now be presented weekly until July 2021 in the course of an Ars Electronica Home Delivery series. Using the lasertracking system of the Deep Space the artworks enable visitors to have a collective, audiovisual, aesthetic experience.
