The city of Bidjar is located in the province of Kurdistan in the heart of Northwest Iran. Bijar rugs are produced in the many villages of the surrounding vicinity.

Bijar production is carried out on a semi-organized village manufacturing basis. Kurdish tribes have traditionally been the region's endemic people. The Afshari tribe also produced many Bidjar's workshop rugs. Other Bijar tribal names are Gerus, Helvai, Afshar. The wide range of tribes resulted in a huge wealth of different designs.

Bijar rugs are known for what is called "Iron Rugs." These rugs are distinguished by their weave which is double weft construction with rows that are beaten down during the weaving process producing a dense compact fabric; making them the densest and most durable of all oriental rugs.

Another feature of the Bijar rug is the over-braiding of the kelim, a section of the rug between the end of the pile and the fringe. The fringes are also braided.

The color palette of Bijar rugs is rich and jewel-toned. Field colors include rust, red, beige, and dark navy. Highlights of light green, rose, light blue, yellow, and black are used to make a beautiful contrast.

Floral, geometric, and large medallion designs can be seen in Bijar rugs.

Bijar rugs come in small sizes as well as runner sizes. Large pieces are relatively rare.
