STORYLINE:
With US President George W. Bush's highly anticipated speech on Iraq strategy just hours away, opinions and emotions are being torn among the nations military and their loved ones about the expected announcement of a troop surge into Baghdad.
At Fort Hood in Texas troops of the 4th Infantry Division, US Army jogged and exercised in the predawn hours.
They have just returned to America following a tour in Iraq, but many expect to be back there sooner than expected.
The military commanders say that troop morale is good, and they are ready to make the necessary sacrifices and do their duty.
But some in the ranks expressed frustration with the political turmoil in Iraq, and are ready to hand over the reins to the government in Baghdad - and let Iraqi troops handle their own problems.
Bush will tell the nation Wednesday night (0200GMT Thursday) he will send 21,500 additional American forces to Iraq, acknowledging that it was a mistake earlier not to have more American and Iraqi troops fighting the war.
