Olean - The Last Steam Operated Field Railway in Java - Pt. 1
Olean, near Situbondo, was the last sugar mill in Java that used steam locomotives on lines out into the cane fields. By 2015, there was only one serviceable locomotive left, which could be hired to substitute for the job now normally performed by diesel engines. Olean No: 4 "SEMERU" O&K 0-8-0T (5440/1912), 700mm, is filmed here taking out empty wagons to the cane fields, where they are distributed by teams of Oxen / Water Buffalo on temporary tracks.
This task would normally be performed at sunrise, but obviously delayed for my benefit.
The mill closed completely after the 2016 harvest. It was last place that steam and oxen / water buffalo worked together.
See Pt. 3 for footage of SEMERU taking back loaded wagons to the mill. [ Ссылка ]
