Silver dollars are peaceful medium-size and heardy fish, that's perfect for community aquariums.
1. Origin
The silver dollar fish (scientific name: metynnis argenteus) is native to Brazil's Tapajós River Basin, although it's found all throughout northern South America in shallower tributaries and river systems.
2. Typical Behavior
They are large peaceful schooling fish that require a lot of space to swim in. They should be kept in a group of at least 5 . They'll spend the most of their time swimming at the surface of the water.
Generally they are peaceful fish, but during eating time they can be aggressive and chase each other around the tank.
3. Body Size & Lifespan
The average silver dollar fish size is around 6 inches in length. They are quite hardy fish and with good care can live for around 10 years.
4. Tank Size
Silver dollar is a schooling fish. For them, the aquarist needs have a very large tank. A school of four or more will require an aquarium of 75 gallons or larger.
If you want to keep more than 5 silver dollar fish in a tank, you'll need to add 10-15 gallons each additional fish.
5. Water Condition
When it comes to silver dollar fish care, Maintaining the right water parameters. Generally they are very hardy fish and they can get into trouble if parameters shift too much.
The water should be maintained between 75-82°F, with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5. You have a water hardness range of 4 to 18 dGH.
6. Diet
Silver Dollars are herbivores.They are almost exclusively vegetarian. Some of their favorites are:
Algae wafers
Plant-based flakes
Cucumbers
Peas
Lettuce
Other leafy greens
Seaweed
As a treats, they will consume meaty items. Bloodworms, mosquito larvae (glass worms), and brine shrimp are among their favourite foods.
7. Tankmates
Silver Dollar Fish are large peaceful and active fish. These fish are great community fish that swim in the top part of the aquarium.
Peaceful bottom-feeder fish are usually quite compatible with silver dollars like bristlenose, clown plecos, Kuhli loaches and cory catfish.
There are a number of cichlids that also make great tank mates like Medium to Large sized American Cichlids such as Severums, Green Terrors, red empress, blue dolphin and Oscars.
8. male & Famale
The male's anal fin will have a small amount of red on it. During breeding time, the male will also grow two big black spots that are vertically aligned immediately beyond the base of the pectoral fins.
9. Breeding
If you want to breed in home aquarium,need a 40-50 gallon tank. Keep the temperature at 80–82 degrees Fahrenheit and pH level 8 dGH. When the Silver Dollars are ready to breed,chase the female.
The male will appear to chase until the desired female relents, allowing closer contact. Give them a comfortable landing area for the eggs with plenty of leafy plants to keep them safe until they hatch.
