The Kia XCeed: Hatchback Comfort Meets Crossover Style
Kia's XCeed occupies an interesting niche in the crowded crossover market. Based on the Ceed hatchback, it offers a slightly elevated ride height and SUV-inspired styling cues without fully committing to the crossover formula. The result is a vehicle that aims to blend the best of both worlds - but does it succeed?
On the outside, the XCeed cuts a handsome figure. With its raised suspension, black body cladding, and faux skid plates, it certainly looks the part of a rugged crossover. However, its overall silhouette remains decidedly hatchback-like, setting it apart from boxier competitors.
Under the hood, buyers have two main engine options: a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol producing 160 horsepower, or a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.6-liter petrol engine with an electric motor. The 1.5T offers decent performance for daily driving, while the PHEV provides up to 34 miles of all-electric range - perfect for short commutes.
On the road, the XCeed delivers a comfortable and composed ride. Its raised suspension soaks up bumps and potholes with ease, making it well-suited to urban environments. Handling is predictable and secure, if not particularly sporty. The light steering and good visibility make maneuvering in tight spaces a breeze.
Step inside, and you'll find an interior that's largely carried over from the standard Ceed. Material quality is good for the class, with a logical layout and intuitive controls. Higher trim levels benefit from a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that's responsive and easy to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across the range.
Space up front is generous, with plenty of adjustment in the driving position. Rear seat accommodations are less impressive, with limited headroom for taller passengers due to the sloping roofline. The 426-liter boot (with adjustable floor) offers practical cargo capacity, expanding to 1,378 liters with the rear seats folded.
Kia has equipped the XCeed with a solid array of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and driver attention monitoring. Higher trims add niceties like adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system.
Fuel economy for the 1.5T petrol engine is rated at up to 46.3 mpg combined, which is somewhat disappointing compared to some rivals. The plug-in hybrid fares better, with a claimed 201 mpg when utilizing its electric range effectively.
Pricing for the XCeed starts at £23,815, positioning it competitively against similarly-sized crossovers. Kia's excellent 7-year/100,000-mile warranty adds significant peace of mind for buyers.
