Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Kuerer attended Rutgers College and received his MD and PhD in Molecular Immunology at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, trained in general surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, completed his fellowship training at MD Anderson and also practiced at the University of California-San Francisco.
Recruited back to MD Anderson to help establish a premier program to train breast cancer surgeons of the future, he is now a tenured Professor of Surgery, the Director of the Breast Surgical Oncology Training Program, and a member of the Clinical Cancer Prevention Program. He maintains a busy clinical research program and is also a Co-Principal Investigator for the newly expanded national cooperative group NRG Oncology (formerly National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and Gynecologic Oncology Group) at MD Anderson, is on the editorial board of several clinical journals, and is an active member on several committees with the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Kuerer is heavily involved with the MD Anderson Cancer Network clinical expansion in terms of comprehensive assessment, benchmarking, and review of potential new partners and ongoing member hospital and programmatic relationships nationally and internationally. As the Executive Director of Breast Programs he is responsible for further integration of Texas Medical Center breast programs across the network as it relates to our mission of excellence in breast cancer clinical care, faculty mentorship, education and research.
Dr. Kuerer is a regularly invited speaker at academic, national, and international meetings and has authored or coauthored more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific reports, editorials/commentaries, and text chapters. Dr. Kuerer is Editor-in-Chief of the definitive McGraw-Hill textbook, Breast Surgical Oncology.
