Diabetes can affect the eye in many ways. Most important effect on eye is Diabetic Retinopathy which can cause blindness as well. Often the vision loss because of diabetic Retinopathy does not recover, therefore it’s best to detect the disease in early stage and perform the timely treatment as and when required.
Every person with Diabetes must get the regular retina check-up done by the retina specialist even if he does not have any visual problems. Retinal examinations and special test like OCT or Angiography may be done. Laser treatment are recommended in some cases or in certain cases Intravitreal injections like anti-VEGF like Eylea, Accentirx and Ranibizumab are used or Steroids like Ozurdex are used along with laser and surgical treatment. In advanced stages with Vitreous Haemorrhage, retinal detachment etc., Vitrectomy Surgery may be required.
