On a hill overlooking the Gulf of Naples, only a few kilometres away from Pompeii, lay three villas buried by the eruption of 79 AD. In 2002, the RAS Foundation has taken on the task of preserving, promoting and studying them. Since then, 22 international teams have completed research and restoration projects on site; 30 academic groups have taken advantage of its education programs; 3,500 students a year have resided and studied on campus at the Vesuvian Institute.
