In this scene, the Minister has a scold's bridle made by a blacksmith to be fitted on to Anna. Anna opens her mouth and allows the restricting plate of the bridle to be inserted into her mouth, which will slip over her tongue and prevent her from talking. The Minister then locks the bridle onto her head and removes the key, leaving Anna unable to remove the device and unable to speak. She cannot bear the torture and humiliation, and while still wearing the bridle, Anna hangs herself in full view of the church congregation.
