This is the reason why Darth Maul wields a double bladed lightsaber! Before Star Wars episode 1 The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul was sent on a mission by Sidious to take out a very powerful Jedi who left the Order to pursue a better understanding of the Force. When Maul found him, he noticed that the Jedi was unarmed and charged in for an easy kill but to Maul's surprise, the Jedi smacked Maul right across the face with a stick stunning him! Getting up to attack the Jedi again, Maul thought he still had the advantage because he had a lightsaber against a wooden staff. However, to Maul's surprise, the Jedi embarrassed him by dodging Maul's attacks and continued to beat him with the staff, not allowing Maul to touch him with his lightsaber. Eventually the Jedi knocked Maul's lightsaber out of his hands to which the Jedi took advantage of and beat Maul until he gave up. After giving up the battle, Maul evaluated that his single bladed lightsaber was too short for striking distance so, he crafted a double bladed one after his humiliating lesson.
