Contrary to what you might think, it's not your pet's fur or hair that's the actual problem. People with cat or dog allergies are really allergic to proteins in their saliva, urine, and dander.
Welcome to ANB. The internet show where we feed your curiosity with bite-sized pieces of knowledge. Today's topic: What is Dander?
Merriam-Webster defines dander as minute scales from hair, feathers, or skin that may be allergenic.
Quite often, pet allergy is triggered by exposure to dander a pet sheds. Any animal with fur can be a source of pet allergy, but pet allergies are most commonly associated with cats and dogs. Asides from dander, allergens from cats and dogs can also be found in their saliva, urine and sweat. Due to these factors, there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic breed of cat or dog.
Dander is specially problematic because it's very small and can remain airborne for long periods of time with the slightest bit of air circulation. It also collects easily in upholstered furniture and can often stick to your clothes.
Signs of pet allergy include sneezing and runny nose. Some people may also experience wheezing and difficulty breathing.
Love pets, but worried your kids could be allergic? Well, pet allergies are common. However, being exposed to pets at an early age may help you avoid pet allergies. Some studies have found that children who live with a cat or a dog in the first year of life, may have better resistance to upper respiratory infections during childhood than kids who don't at that age.
