Newly-installed Haitian President Rene Preval has appealed to President Clinton for the return of documents seized by the U-S military last year.
An estimated 30 to 60 thousand documents were taken from an armed group suspected of carrying out politically motivated assassinations in Haiti.
Preval, who met Clinton in Washington on Thursday, also called for economic help for his country.
It's Preval's first visit to Washington since his inauguration last month as the elected successor to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
President Clinton pledged continued support for Haiti.
SOUNDBITE:
The institutions and people who caused so much of the problems in the past have been changed and I think there is a new atmosphere of hope in the country, and we know that they have significant challenges economically and otherwise, and we're committed to continuing our efforts to work with our friends around the world - Canada and other places - to try to support Haiti and make sure that the great democratic effort of America succeeds.
