Turkey's largest city has been hit by a storm that has dumped 3 feet of snow in some areas since Tuesday, wreaking havoc on roads and causing hundreds of vehicle accidents.
Some 850 accidents occurred across Istanbul and visibility dipped to 16 feet, according to the city's mayor in a statement posted on the municipality's website.
Some five thousand workers and 1,028 vehicles have been deployed citywide to help clear the snow, the mayor added.
The governor's office released a statement forbidding trucks and vehicles without snow chains from entering traffic.
Schools closed and flights were cancelled at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, according to Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu.
Some residents of the metropolis, with a population of over 14 million, struggled to cope with difficult commutes to work while others enjoyed the landscape.
Turkey's weather authority predicts snowfall in Istanbul will continue through Thursday.
