In 1960, Russia Downed a U-2 Plane With An SA-2 Missile.
On May 1st, 1960, a U-2 plane took off from Peshawar, Pakistan, and headed to Bodo, Norway, but by flying across Russia. However, the U-2 pilot didn't know about the upgraded Russian SA-2 missiles, capable of reaching the U-2's altitude of 75,000 feet. After 4 hours and some 1300 miles into flight, the US pilot saw MiG-21s and Su-9s trying to intercept the U2, but failed due to its high altitude. Then, over Sverdlovsk, 14 surface-to-air missiles were fired. 12 failed, but one detonated nearby, while another hit the plane.
