It is over 2100 years old and from the days of the Pharoahs, and it is smack bang in the middle of the Spanish capital!
Well, we have to go back to 1960. At the time Egypt under their new President Nasser, was building the huge Aswan Dam. It was going to flood large swathes of the Nile Delta, and also submerge many ancient buildings. Egypt sent out a call to the rest of the World for help. They wanted help to save as many of these wonderful, ancient monuments as possible. And Spanish archaeologists answered the call.
The Egyptians, in thanks to the Spanish, gave them these majestic temple, The Temple Of Debod. In 1968 it was shipped over to Spain, brick by brick, landing in the city port of Valencia, and then transported up to Madrid, where it was re-constructed. It was a time consuming exercise as you can imagine. But isn't it worth it?
There are not many original, ancient Egyptian buildings outside of Egypt. So if you have never been to Egypt, and never seen the buildings from the Pharoahs, come here to Madrid. For me, it was my first time to see one.
On top of that, it is free to get in, and if you arrive early in the morning, you will almost be on your own!
