Virtual walking tour of Schadow Street in Dusseldorf, Germany
Schadowstraße, before 1850 Flinger Steinweg, is a shopping street in Düsseldorf, one of the busiest in Germany. It was named in 1851 after the painter Wilhelm von Schadow, who founded the Düsseldorf School of Painting in 1826 through his teaching activities as director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
Schadowstrasse runs from west to east in the northern part of Düsseldorf's Stadtmitte district. It begins at the northern Königsallee, corner Blumenstraße, becomes a pedestrian zone after 30 meters, tangents Schadowplatz at the southern end, passed under the elevated Tausendfüßler, which was demolished in 2013, leaves Jan-Wellem-Platz to the north and (until it was lowered into the Kö-Bogen tunnel) met the busy northbound lane of Düsseldorf's south-north drive Berliner Allee. Today, only a streetcar line and a landscaped pedestrian promenade cross here. To the north, there is a view of the Dreischeibenhaus and the Schauspielhaus on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. Schadowstrasse now runs dead straight to the intersection with Jacobistrasse and Tonhallenstrasse. Today it is a pedestrian and bicycle street. Until the construction of the Wehrhahnlinie (subway line), not only motor vehicles but also streetcars ran along the eastern main part of Schadowstraße. After the intersection with Jacobi/Tonhallenstraße, where a large department store is located, it continues eastward and is called Am Wehrhahn from here on.
