“Synergy” is defined as being when the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Never has this been more evident than with the Polygon Xtrada 5, certainly the parts, individually, are well designed, however, when grouped together as on the Xtrada 5 they produce something remarkable. The result is a smooth rolling package combined with effortless class and good looks. It’s a bike that will be just as credible on the mountain bike trail, as it will be commuting in the city. The outcome is much greater than the simple arithmetic summation of the parts.
The Xtrada 5 is built around a lightweight, hydroformed Alutech Sport XC frame. A new curved and hydroformed aluminium top tube reduces weight and gives the bike a more refined presence. The frame comes internally routed, which provides cleaner lines to the bike and also reduces the chances of any cables getting snagged on trees or rocks while riding. Polygon is so confident in the performance of this frame that it has a lifetime warranty.
The Xtrada series utilises Polygon's new Wheel Fit Size System whereby each frame size is paired with the wheel size that best fits the rider and sets them up for optimal efficiency and power transfer. We pair 29˝ wheels with 18.5˝ and larger bikes, and more proportional, better-fitting 27.5˝ wheels for 17.5˝ and smaller bikes.
The Xtrada 5.0 is spec'd with the Shimano Alivio M4000, 18-speed groupset. Much of its technology has been trickled down from Shimano's premium high-end groupsets. Small details like the new direct mount rear derailleur, RapidFire Plus, 2 Way release and Octalink bottom bracket unit were once exclusive to XT and SLX and yet now are available on the Alivio groupset. Polygon has opted for the 2 x 9-speed setup this year based on customer feedback from the previous year model. Using a double chainring as opposed to triple chainring significantly reduces cross chaining and also means less maintenance and smoother shifting. A new wider 11-36T cassette on the rear also means there is minimal difference in gear ratio.
The bike comes equipped with a 120mm travel SR Suntour XCM suspension fork (with a hydraulic lockout ) to give the bike greater control while descending rough terrain at high speeds. With the increased travel in the fork, the head tube and stem length have been shortened to preserve the neutral riding position that Polygons are known for. There has been no compromise on the popular handling characteristics of the bike, yet the additional travel ensures the bike is more forgiving in more technical environments. The Shimano M315 hydraulic disc brakes offer excellent modulation, fierce stopping power and yet are simple to service.
The Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres offer oodles of grip off road with its side knobs and a fast rolling center track. Araya double wall alloy rims laced onto genuine Shimano alloy hubs complete the sturdy wheelset for the bike.
