#iceberg #A23a
The world’s largest and oldest iceberg, A23a, weighing over one trillion tonnes and twice the size of Greater London, has broken free after being stuck on the seafloor for more than 30 years. Calved from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986, the iceberg had remained grounded in the Weddell Sea due to the Taylor Column, a unique oceanic phenomenon that kept it spinning in place.
In 2020, A23a began its journey north and has now fully broken free, moving through the Southern Ocean. Scientists predict it will follow the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, eventually heading toward South Georgia Island. As it drifts into warmer waters, the iceberg is expected to break apart and melt, providing crucial data on the behavior of large icebergs and their effects on marine ecosystems.
