Immortalised in the 2019 Hollywood blockbuster, Le Mans ’66, staring Matt Damon and Christian Bale and having been victorious at the Le Mans 24 Hours on four separate occasions, the Ford GT40 is a race car that needs little introduction.
With the values of the original period built GT40s now ending with several zeros and being cosseted in some of the most serious classic car collections worldwide, historic motorsport grids are now populated with the most authentic and potent recreations available, built by UK constructor and preparer Gelscoe Motorsport. Built to exacting tool room copy standards, Gelscoe GT40s are the standard bearer recognized by race series organisers worldwide and quite rightly have a waiting list of clients wishing to purchase one of these race winning machines.
Beat the waiting list and get yourself behind the wheel of one of the most iconic racecars ever with the fantastic, as new example we are now delighted to offer.
Built in 2018 to FIA Appendix K Pre ’65 regulations, GEL 014 is finished in its striking Dark Blue race livery, is fitted with a rare “New Old Stock” original 289 engine block which is stronger than used, bored out blocks, around which the race engine was built by renowned race engine builder Steve Warrior. The car has had its engine rebuilt in November 2019 after the car completed its first 18 hours testing and racing at Daytona, Sebring and most recently Spa, in the Spa Six Hours. The gearbox was rebuilt after Daytona and Sebring and the spare gearbox with Spa gearing was installed, ready for the Six Hour race. This same gearbox has also been refreshed after Spa.
The car is fitted with additional options such as an FIA-approved full roll cage and with a number of endurance racing-focused extras, all installed by Gary Spencer’s team at Classic Racing Cars, who have looked after many race winning GT40s, Cobras and Mustangs over the years. The car wants for nothing, is fully prepared and on the button ready for its new owner to vie for wins at any of the top historic races they choose to enter.
Extras options installed include:
• Heated front screen
• Reserve fuel tank
• Enhanced wiring loom to accommodate optional extras
• Second fuel pump, MSD and coils installed, allowing for easy driver repair
• Gearbox with Spa ratios
• Cabin electric fan
• Digital clock / stopwatch
• Flash to pass system
• Low halogen spotlights
• Handheld fire extinguisher
• Quick release removable steering wheel
Notable results during its limited racing life so far include 3rd position of prototypes in Group A at the 2019 Sebring 12 Hours, proving its front running potential and endurance capabilities at a circuit renowned as a car breaker.
Accompanying the car as a spare is the fully rebuilt original gearbox in Daytona gearing set up (longer 4th and 5th gears for maximum top end speed) - a new one has a waiting time of 12 months. The car is currently on the Spa wheels set-up with 6½” front wheels and 8” rear wheels and comes with 8 spare wheels: four 10”, two 8” and two 6½”, This allows you to run the wider wheel set-up of 8” front and 10” rear wheels allowed at most other events and gives two complete sets of wheels for either type of event. Also included is a 2018 HD VBox and cameras, a bespoke car cover and a useful package of service spare items.
This is a beautifully built turn-key racecar in as new and immaculate condition throughout, readied for its return to the circuit. In the right hands this GT40 is a potential winner in the world’s most prestigious historic endurance races such as the Masters Series, Spa 6 hours, Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Classic 24 Hours of Daytona and Sebring Classic 12 Hours.
