I have coveted one of these machines for a few years. Why? Because I am shocking artist yet I would love to engrave some of the things I make. These were primarily designed for sign writers and commercial engravers going back, I believe to the middle of the last century. However the mechanical principle of the pantograph means that hopefully it can be used for more creative purposes.
The manual models have been superseded by CNC and laser engraving machines however these are still available. The modern ones cost well over £1,000.
One of the only differences I can see is that mine has a max motor speed of 3600rpm and the new ones seem to go to 18,000 which quite a big jump. I got this one for £130 at auction. As you can tell it needs some love and attention so I decided to make this video in 2 parts.
Part one: The refurb of the machine
Part two: Learning to use it.
