During the cold war, the US and Russia both used to place their submarines close to each other's coast, but the collapse of the Soviet Union literally eliminated Russia's capability to send its submarines thousands of miles away from its home ports. However, this changed in 2009, when 2 Russian Akula class, or project-971 submarines were found patrolling just miles away from the U.S eastern seaboard. Please note that these were not the Akulas that can launch intercontinental ballistic missiles, rather they were cruise missile subs or SSGNs. According to the Pentagon, one of the submarines remained in the international waters some 200 miles off the east coast of US, while the location of the second submarine remained anonymous. Although they were in the international waters, but this still gives them striking capability to hit cities on eastern seaboard. Akulas carry Kalibr land attack cruise missiles, with a range of up to 300 miles, which means they could target New York, Baltimore and even the Washington D.C.! However, the United States Navy was able to track these subs as they made their way through international waters off the U.S coastline.
