The Loire valley in France, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with historic castles, is losing its river as a record drought rocks the region. Tourist boats are having a hard time traveling through the river, as the water contained within is less than a twentieth that of the average annual levels.

The river also provides cooling water to four nuclear power plants, which account for almost a fifth of France’s electrical production.
Eric Sauquet, a hydrology researcher at INRAE, France’s national research institute for agriculture, food, and the environment, said, ‘Climate change is underway, it's undeniable, and it must encourage us to reflect on our rules for sharing water resources. We must understand that we are all affected, water is a common good, and every one of us will have to rethink their behavior when it comes to that resource. This is an indispensable element.’
