If you’ve been surfing the internet for a longer time, you probably heard McAfee, and probably not in the best light. But did you know that McAfee is not only still running after more than 30 years but constantly appears in the ""Best of"" list? So, what's going on, and more importantly - Is McAfee worth it? Let’s find out in my McAfee antivirus review…

If we look at the McAfee antivirus app a little closer, we can see that it comes not only with an antivirus part but it packs some McAfee secure extras. These, of course, include a password manager and a McAfee VPN, as well as some more "standard" ones. Let's look at them a bit closer.

Starting a scan is simple, just go here and select what type of scan you want this time. The choice is standard here - quick scan, full scan, and specific folder scan. We'll talk about how good these are a bit later in the video, but they seem to work pretty fine…

McAfee internet security is also quite robust, giving you protection from Ransomware, fully customizable firewalls, and browser extension that prevents malware and bad URLs. Next, let's turn on the VPN McAfee feature and see how it works. Well, it's effortless to find and activate, that's for sure, and you get to choose from around 50 different countries to connect to. In terms of its functionality, it's quite a basic VPN, it does its job and has a kill switch, but we can't compare it to industry leaders like NordVPN or Surfshark.

That couldn't be said about its password manager - True Key. I've had the pleasure of working with this app for a few other videos we did, and it works great. It's quick, secure, and allows me to add extra steps on multi-factor authentication if I feel like it, so yeah, great extra.

We can take a look at the antivirus McAfee Speed Up feature, it's supposed to automatically speed up my system and browser. Now don't expect magical results from these features, but they work. Web Boost stopping auto-play videos did make a noticeable impact on some sites, and App Booster did increase performance in a small way. So at no extra cost, great extras to have.

📢 Our Test 📢

This wouldn't be a "best" antivirus review video if we didn't put all these claims to the test. And to do a McAfee total protection review, I've placed ten malware items in a folder on my pc. Then I started with the quick scan option. After a few minutes, it was completed and found… no malware files, but that's expected from a quick scan since they're more targeted to already known threats. The quick scan also didn't tax my system much, so while it's a good practice to scan your pc for known threads, I'll recommend opting for the full scan…

Talking about the full scan, it took McAfee around 22 minutes to finish, and it managed to get rid of 8 out of 10 zero-day malware files. Not a perfect result, but still great. However, the taxation system was a bit more noticeable this time. For most of the scan, my CPU was at around 90% of its load. So it's not the best option if you need to scan your pc and work on it too.

Overall, McAfee is a good antivirus that might need a bit more optimization. If you want an antivirus that doesn't tax your system, I'll mention some alternatives at the end of this video, so stay till the end…

Is McAfee worth it? Yeah, apart from some small things and not having a completely free plan or at least a trial, it packs everything you need to stay safe. And it adds some nice extras on top of that. With a decent price point, all that negative reputation should start to disperse sooner or later. No matter what McAfee was in the past, now it's just good antivirus software.
