The London district of Wandsworth Town is located just south of the Thames, east of Putney and west of Battersea.

Its name is derived from the River Wandle (or possibly vice versa!), London's largest tributary of the Thames, seen around the 13-minute mark. Wandsworth has a history going back well over 900 years, appearing in the Domesday Book (1086) as Wandesorde and Wendelesorde.

The area was home to Britain's oldest brewery, going back to 1581 when the owner of the Ram Inn began brewing his own ale, which eventually became the Ram Brewery which was in operation until 2006.

HMP Wandsworth is London's largest prison. Although not featured in the walk it is situated roughly a mile south of the high street. Ronnie Biggs famously escaped Wandsworth Prison with a rope ladder in 1965 before fleeing the country after the Great Train Robbery.
