STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Tibetan exiles began a two-day mass protest against the Beijing Olympics in Dharmsala on Thursday, the seat of Tibet's government-in-exile.
Wearing black head bands and chanting anti-China slogans, Tibetan exiles marched through the streets of the Northern Indian town which is also home to the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader.
The protests are being organised by Tibetan activist groups including Students for Free Tibet, The Tibetan Women's Association and the National Democratic Party of Tibet to demand an end to alleged human rights violations in Tibet.
The Dalai Lama on Wednesday offered his prayers and good wishes to the people of China ahead of the Olympic Games that begin in Beijing on Friday.
The Dalai Lama has been vilified lately by Chinese authorities who blame him for the recent unrest in Tibet, which Beijing says were part of a campaign to split the Himalayan region from the rest of China.
The Dalai Lama has denied these charges, saying that despite China's harsh crackdown on the demonstrations that erupted in March, he still supports a solution of meaningful autonomy for the Tibetan people under China's rule, not independence.
Dharmsala has been the headquarters of the Tibetan exiles in India since the Dalai Lama fled there after an uprising against China in 1959.
