STORYLINE
The top United Nations aid official in Gaza said dozens of masked gunmen have vandalised a UN summer camp being set up for children and teens on the Gaza shore.
The UN Relief and Works Agency's (UNWRA) Director of Operations in Gaza, John Ging, said the assailants tied up a guard early on Sunday, burned tents and vandalised bathrooms.
UN officials said the attackers left behind three bullets and a written note threatening to kill Ging and others unless the UN cancels its activities for some 250-thousand Gaza children.
The summer camps offer arts, sports and other activities.
Ging said the UN will repair the damage and continue with its summer plans, declaring the "UNRWA will not be intimidated by these actions."
There was no claim of responsibility, though the likely suspects are Islamic extremists who oppose the UN camps.
Gaza's Hamas rulers have set up rival camps while some Hamas leaders have also railed against UN camps.
