Fasching has been around since the time before the Romans. The average person had a hard time during these times, so carnival time was a chance to be free, enjoy life, and have some fun in a world where many people didn't have any fun.
Today's masks and costumes came from the Middle Ages when people didn't just wear them for fun. Instead, they were used to avoid punishment and persecution by making fun of the strict rulers of the time. If they hadn't been able to hide their identities with masks, they would have been caught and killed.
Some people also think that fasching began as a way to get rid of winter and the ghosts of darkness, who were losing their power as the sun got warmer in the spring. Rituals in these places include parades where people make a lot of noise and wear scary masks to scare away the ghosts of winter and keep them from getting back at them. It was also a festival to honour the goddess Freya and celebrate the beginning of spring and fertility.
