The Sargasso Sea is unique among the world’s seas because it’s the only one defined entirely by ocean currents rather than by coastlines or land borders. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, it’s bounded by the Gulf Stream to the west, the North Atlantic Current to the north, the Canary Current to the east, and the North Atlantic Equatorial Current to the south. These circulating currents create a calm, warm-water zone that traps large amounts of seaweed, mainly Sargassum, giving the sea its name.
This sea also has a unique ecosystem, serving as a habitat for a range of species, including eels, sea turtles, and various fish. The Sargasso Sea’s distinct boundaries and ecosystems make it one of the most interesting and unusual marine environments on Earth.
