In 1894, two men named Charles Lawlor and James W. Blake met in a New York City hat shop called Golding Bros. Within a few minutes, they had created one of the most beloved pieces of music of all-time. Lawlor composed the music and Blake wrote the lyrics. Golding Bros. "hattery" is featured on two NYC Victorian Era trading cards that I have collected over the years.
Not only did the pair create a memorable tune, "The Sidewalks of New York," but they also gave a campaign theme song to future 1928 Democratic primary winner Al Smith. By the time Blake died, Smith decided to be a pallbearer and carry his casket, a completion to a moving story from history.
Golding Bros. (Brothers) Victorian era trading cards are available on eBay, but you might not find a cheap price. If you do, grab one and display it in your home. It has a story to tell.
