The Wanamaker organ was built in 1904 for the St. Louis Worlds Fair. In 1909, John Wanamaker acquired it for his flagship store in Philadelphia, PA USA. Installation took two years and on June 22, 1911, at the same moment as King George V was crowned in Westminster Abby, the Grand Organ was heard for the first time in the seven story atrium of John Wanamaker's store. Despite the size of the organ, its tone was judged to be inadequate for the size of the atrium. Wanamaker's response was to build an organ factory in the attic of his building, where forty full time craftsmen expanded the size of the instrument. Today it has twenty eight thousand seven hundred fifty pipes ranging from a quarter of an inch to thirty two feet in length.
This grand instrument can be heard twice daily from Monday through Saturday in the Wanamaker Building in Philadelphia, PA, USA
