Giant flashing 61.00 CTS natural Tanzanite cabochon originating from Tanzania. This measures approximately 28.0 x 17.7 x 11.0 mm and is cut into rectangular shape. Instead of the typical curved top this has been cut into a pyramid shape top.
This is a true collection piece that is not only very large but of a higher grade quality as well. Considering the size of the gemstone this is a fantastic value for this class of product.
The stone has an ultra rich deep blue coloring with undertones of violet. The gem also produces a violet colored flash and spark within the surface when exposed to light on certain angles.
This is not fully opaque like many cabochons, there is an excellent amount of translucency giving this a more "gemmy" appearance. This is another indication of the higher grade quality this can be classed in.
As if these aspects weren't enough to make this a top tier item, there is also brilliant sparkles and even rainbow effects caused by the natural inclusions and variations within the gem.
This will make a very impressive pendant, large piece of jewelry, or perhaps part of a collection. This cannot be considered flawless, although that is true of all cabochons we have seen, as flawless material is generally reserved for faceted pieces which yield higher values. The natural inclusions are actually what gives the stone many of the interesting optical effects.
Tanzanite is considered one of the most rare gemstones in the world, and is known to be more rare than diamonds. It is estimated that the stone is up to 1000 times more rare than diamonds. It is only found in northern Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro. It is estimated by analysts that once the current supply runs out, the remaining pieces will be "heirloom" items.
Tanzanite belongs to the zoisite family of stones, and is the blue /violet variety. It is a trichroic stone, meaning it has the ability to show three different sets of color hues depending on the angle on which its viewed. It is also considered to be a birthstone of December.
