One of my biggest complaints about digital media, whether you’re talking about movies, using, or games, is the misrepresentation that you actually own a piece of digital content. The truth is you don’t own anything unless you have it physically in your possession, and different online storefronts misrepresent when you “buy” a digital piece of media all the time, indicating that you are buying that content. In truth, what you are buying is a limited term license that can be revoked at any time and for any reason. Sure, you can play that digital media as long as you have a copy of it on your hardware, but what happens if it is removed from the online repository and you need to redownload it? You get nothing. Sega just proved this point again by announcing that on December 6, 2024 a ton of their games are getting delisted from the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 5, Xbox, and Steam.

HOLY CRAP That's a ton of games! Yet again, this is a harsh reality that you do NOT own a digital purchase, and that it can be removed at any time for any reason. Several of these games are now available in things like the Sega Genesis Nintendo Switch ONLINE services, a pay-to-play service. I hate this so much, especially knowing that they are going to generate a ton of revenue from panic purchasers.
What do you think about this? Are you saddened to see this happen like I am? And no, before someone puts it in the comments, it doesn't justify piracy.
