In 2016, over 2.3 million candidates took exams for just 24,000 job vacancies in West Bengal's government schools. However, the Calcutta High Court uncovered that some candidates had bribed their way into these positions. Some even submitted blank OMR sheets and still secured jobs!
As a result, on April 22, 2024, the Calcutta High Court cancelled the appointments of over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching staff, ordering them to return their salaries with interest.
What's next? The affected individuals, along with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, strongly opposed the ruling and challenged it in the Supreme Court.
So, what did the top court decide? Watch the video to find out more.
