Teaching the Sidepass Made Simple
This video is in response to a comment on my previous video asking for more information about hand and foot placement for the sidepass.
Teaching the sidepass can be easy! When we keep it simple, it becomes simple for our horses too. Start by breaking it down: move just the front end or the back end first. Once they understand those pieces, putting it together becomes much easier for your horse.
Moving Your Horse’s Shoulders to the Right
1.Get your horse bridled up and focused.
2.Take your left leg off the horse’s side.
3.Move your left hand/rein off the horse’s neck.
4.Place your right hand down on the horse’s neck or shoulder.
5.Apply pressure with your right leg near the front cinch.
6.Release the pressure as soon as your horse moves their front end to the right.
Moving Your Horse’s Hip to the Right
1.Pick up the right rein.
2.Apply pressure with your leg near the back cinch.
3.Release the pressure as soon as your horse moves their hip to the right.
Putting It All Together
Let your horse settle between moving each body part to help them stay patient and confident.
When it’s time to sidepass, you’ll combine the movements: front end, back end, front end, back end. As your horse gets more comfortable and confident, they’ll start moving their entire body to the side smoothly.
For more refinement, you’ll shift your leg pressure to the “neutral” position (right under your hips) to push their whole body to the side.
And for the sidepass to the left, simply reverse the hand and leg positions.
Keep it simple, and it’ll be simple for your horse too!
