Today, July 13, Montenegro celebrates its National Day or statehood Day, honoring its recongnition of sovereignth in 1878. Situated between Serbia and the Adriatic Sea in southeastern Europe, Montenegro is known for its architectural heritage. Examples of this include the 16th-century Husein-Pasha Mosque in Pljevlja, the Romanesque Cathedral of St. Tryphon, and Our Lady of the Rocks Baroque church on an islet in the Bay of Kotor. The Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. Montenegro's wonderfully scenic Durmitor National Park, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, has some of the deepest gorges in Europe. We wish the citizens of Montenegro a splendid Statehood Day.
