“The terrible legend of Ken-oh... Begins here!”
Now we get to play as Raoh. One look at his stats and you can tell he’s meant to be the Lu Bu of the game. For the record, his starting stats are better than Toki’s stats by the time I finished his story and had 3 stages worth of levels for him. Furthermore, his moveset is hands down the best in the game. I do so love it when they get the Lu Bu archetype right.
Raoh gets shockwaves on just about all of his attacks, which gives him a ton of range compared to the other hand to hand to fighters. If all the other characters had shockwaves like Raoh, this game would be much more fun to play and significantly more appropriate as a Warriors title. Having shockwaves also allows Raoh to fight spike officers using nothing but his basic S-string, which is pretty cool.
On top of the shockwaves giving him more range, he’s also fast. His C3 is a ridiculous beat down combo where he just pummels an enemy. He can also juggle an enemy mid-air with it and it’s super easy to Meridian Shock an enemy with him. His C4 is the biggest Charge attack in the game and rivals Toki’s as far as damage goes.
His R1 allows him to harden his skin, giving him a defense buff. It also makes things like projectiles and environmental hazards do 0 damage and don’t even make him flinch, so he can just no sell all of the most annoying dangers in the game. You can do this at no cost, so there’s no reason to not have it active 24/7. He and Kenshiro are also the only characters that can use enemies as rams with their grab attacks, which is nice.
His starting musou is fantastic as well, allowing him to blow enemies away. This has about as much range as Lu Bu’s first musou in DW7/8, so it’s pretty damn good.
Raoh’s story is unique in that he gets to fight the protagonists, so even in stages he share’s with Ken, they’re still different because you fight him at the end. Raoh probably has the 2nd most effort put into his story mode, which makes it pretty enjoyable.
Raoh is voiced by Dave B. Mitchell, who voices Liu Bei and Guan Yu in DW6-DW8 as well as Kiyomori Tiara in WO2. He also sounds incredibly authentic when doing the musou attacks, sounds just like a native Japanese person would. If I didn’t know for a fact the English VA’s recorded those lines I’d have thought it was Raoh’s Japanese voice.
