(1 Mar 2020) Slovakia's parliamentary election winner pledged Sunday to change the country for the better, after his center-right opposition party defeated the ruling leftist party in the polls.
The Ordinary People group, headed by Igor Matovic, came top, capturing around 25% of the vote.
Speaking alongside other party leaders in a televised debate after the election, Matovic said he wanted a government that would be the best.
The defeated Smer party, led by former populist prime minister Robert Fico, came second with just over 18%.
Smer, which has ruled Slovakia for most of the past 14 years, had campaigned on an anti-migrant platform.
But it was badly damaged by political turmoil that followed the murder of an investigative journalist and his fiancee in 2018.
The results look set to give Ordinary People 53 seats in the 150-seat parliament, with Smer on 38 seats.
Slovakia's turn to the right could bring the far-right SME Rodina (We Are Family) party into government as a coaliiton partner.
