Deadly Disasters: Volcanoes

Human history is littered with stories of gigantic volcanic eruptions and the tragic fates of those who could not outrun the burning lava and poisonous gases. In our own times, volcanoes continue to cause large-scale destruction.
Volcanoes are put into three categories: extinct, dormant, and active. But in this episode we show how even unexpected eruptions can happen, and when they do, they are both spectacular and terrifying.
Sinabung in Indonesia erupted in 2010 after 400 years of dormancy causing chaos to thousands. We take a look at one of the most active volcanoes in Europe: the fiery giant Mount Etna. And then, how Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo desolated a village.
We explore what draws flocks of tourists to nature’s deadly infernos, and whether they can ever truly be safe.
