The Sicilian Najdorf is a very aggressive opening choice and is highly recommended for those of you, who like tactical dynamic play and who like to play for a win from the get-go. The opening has been favored historically by such greats such as Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov, who was especially famous for how dangerous he was with the Najdorf variation. In more recent times, some of the world’s top ten have also embraced the Najdorf on a regular basis, for example GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, have all played it on many occasions.

In this video, IM Alex Astaneh is sharing with you how to play the Sicilian Najdorf and is also showing a game that was played in the Najdorf variation of the Sicilian Defense. The Najdorf variation is the most popular Sicilian Defense. In addition to this, we are going to discuss the major options that white has on the sixth move, so that you get a little bit of a flavor for all the different variations that can take place in the Najdorf.
The focus of this video is on the English Attack in the Sicilian Defense which is characterized by playing the Bishop to the e3-square. The English Attack is explored in-depth, but other variations are also covered in the video.
The main variations covered in the video:
2:41 Sicilian Defense – Najdorf, English Attack 6.Be3 (Main focus of the video)
3:49 Sicilian Defense – Najdorf, Lipnitsky Attack 6.Bc4
6:11 Sicilian Defense – Najdorf, 6.Bg5

15:05 Sicilian Defense – Najdorf, English Attack (Master game with many theoretical ideas + variations)
The Sicilian Najdorf is an opening that we recommend to people who like those dynamic, tactical games and who also don’t mind learning some concrete theory because there is certainly a lot of chess theory in the Najdorf, but it is also very much fun with a lot of interesting positions.
