The first orchestral recording of Jacqueline du Pré (from 1965) was also the premiere on record of Frederick Delius’ ethereal cello concerto. A memorable performance still regarded as the summit of the discography.
Frederick Theodore Albert Delius (born January 29, 1862, in Bradford, England - died June 10, 1934, in Grez-sur-Loing, France) was a British post-romantic composer of German origin. As a child, he learned the violin and piano, but his father, Julius Delius, a German industrialist who ran a wool manufacturing business, did not intend for him to pursue a career in music. At thirteen, he discovered Wagner's music by attending a concert. At his request, his father sent him to Florida to Solano Grove on the banks of the St. Johns River to manage an orange plantation while studying composition. It was following this stay that he composed his first orchestral work, Florida Suite.
Returning to Europe, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Reinecke, and it was in this city that he met Edvard Grieg, who profoundly influenced his music. In 1888, thanks to Grieg's intervention with his father, he moved to Paris and lived in France for the rest of his life. From 1924, he suffered from syphilis, which paralyzed and blinded him. Unable to write his music, Eric Fenby, his secretary, transcribed his final compositions from dictation. He died in 1934 in Grez-sur-Loing in Seine-et-Marne.
An admirer of Richard Wagner for music and Friedrich Nietzsche for philosophy, Delius was an original. Two of his works, A Mass of Life (a grand oratorio in German on poems by Nietzsche) and Requiem are characterized by a refined, ecstatic, even grandiloquent language. His opera A Village Romeo and Juliet expresses the same pessimism but allows for more gentleness. Delius also wrote symphonic poems and chamber music. His essentially chromatic style has been described as musical impressionism. Thomas Beecham was the champion of his music and greatly contributed to making it known from 1907 onwards.
