The body of a Palestinian man was found near the Jewish settlement of Itamar in the West Bank late on Monday.
Israel radio received an anonymous phone call from a man speaking in Hebrew who said the man had been killed to avenge the murder of an Israeli earlier in the day.
The Israeli security guard was shot three times and his body dumped in downtown Hebron in an apparent attack by Palestinian militants.
The body of the Palestinian was found near the Jewish settlement of Itamar outside the West Bank town of Nablus.
Local officials identified the victim as a father of three from Beit Furik village.
Police said the Palestinian had been "brutally killed" - it is thought he was beaten to death.
Relatives said the man went missing on Monday evening after picking olives in a grove near Itamar.
The discovery of the body came hours after the killing of an Israeli security guard.
Daniel Vargas was shot three times and his body dumped in downtown Hebron in an apparent attack by Palestinian militants.
Several Israelis have been killed in Hebron in the past by militants hoping to wreck Mideast peacemaking.
The most recent such killing was in August, when a rabbi was slain by a member of the Islamic militant group Hamas.
Police said Monday's murders were not necessarily linked.
But they are likely to raise tensions among Jewish settlers and Palestinian militants over the land-for-security deal Israel and the Palestinians signed in Washington on Friday.
Following the murders, Israel slapped a curfew on the section of divided Hebron under its control, barring Palestinians there from leaving their homes.
