This Sunday's Gospel continues the focus on John the Baptist and his role in preparing the way for Christ. In last week’s reading, John’s connection to Israel’s prophetic tradition was highlighted as he called the people to repentance. Today, John answers the crowd’s question: What does true repentance look like? He responds with specific actions—sharing food and clothing, practicing justice in tax collection, and fairness in authority. Luke’s Gospel emphasizes that faith must be lived out through concrete actions and that the call to salvation is extended to all people, Jews and Gentiles alike.
When the crowd wonders if John might be the Messiah, he clarifies that his mission is to prepare for the One who is to come. John acknowledges his role in God’s plan and encourages others to embrace their roles as well. This reminds us of the mystery of salvation: God invites human cooperation in His divine plan. Like John, we are called to live faithfully within our own vocations, contributing to the unfolding of God’s kingdom.
This Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, a day to rejoice as we draw closer to the celebration of Christ’s birth. The name comes from the Latin word “Gaudete,” meaning “rejoice,” as echoed in the second reading from Philippians and the entrance antiphon for Mass. Many light a pink candle on their Advent wreath as a symbol of the joy that our salvation is near. Let us continue to prepare our hearts with joy and anticipation for the coming of our Savior.
