Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently spoke about the resilience and growth of the Indian economy at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) in Washington DC. During her speech, she highlighted India's ability to bounce back from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sitharaman stated that India had implemented a series of structural reforms that had led to a significant improvement in the ease of doing business in the country. She also noted that India's growth in the manufacturing sector had exceeded expectations, and that the country was on track to achieve its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2025.
In addition to discussing India's economic growth, Sitharaman also addressed the negative perception of India that has been perpetuated by some Western media outlets. She stated that while India faced some challenges, such as the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, it was unfair to paint the country in a negative light.
Sitharaman pointed out that India had the second largest Muslim population in the world, and that the population was only growing. She also noted that in India, every strand of Muslim was doing their business, their children were being educated, and they were being given fellowships. Sitharaman's comments were aimed at countering the negative portrayal of India in the Western media, which has been critical of the country's treatment of its minority communities.
