Ridding the world’s oceans of plastic requires efforts to stop more of it from getting into the water, and also to clean up what is already out there. The largest accumulation of plastic at sea currently is in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, in the North Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California. Non-profit organisation The Ocean Cleanup is attempting to clear up the area, using a huge 2.5km long U-shaped floating barrier to sweep a space the size of a football field every five seconds, and detecting the main clusters of plastic with advanced computer modelling. If all goes well, the firm could clean up the entire patch in about 10 years, CEO and founder Boyan Slat tells CNA’s Asia Now.
