Botulinum toxin - better known as Botox is the most poisonous substance known to man. This toxin is produced by the bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Naturally occurring C. botulinum bacteria and spores are generally harmless. Problems only arise when the spores transform and the cell population increases. Botulinum toxin is extremely dangerous. Some scientists have estimated that 1 gram of toxin can kill 1 million people and that a couple of kilograms could kill every human on this Earth. Botulinum toxin kills its victims by causing respiratory failure. It is a neurotoxin - it enters nerves and destroys vital proteins. This stops communication between nerves and muscles.
