STORYLINE
There was an air of anticipation on the streets of Moscow on Thursday, with just hours to go before the national football team faced Spain in the semi-finals of the European Championship.
This is arguably the most important match ever played by Russia, with a place in Sunday's final against Germany at stake.
Germany beat Turkey 3-2 on Wednesday to book their place in the final two.
Newspaper headlines were dominated by the big match, with manager Guus Hiddink featuring prominently in the headlines and in photos.
The Dutchman turned around the Russian team which looked unlikely to make it through the group stages of the competition, yet astounded the critics with a victory against Hiddink's home land, the Netherlands in the quarter-finals to progress to the last four.
One headline proclaimed: "in Guus we trust," such is the national support for the coach.
One fan, Sergey told AP Television he was totally confident that Russia will beat Spain, saying "of course I expect only victory from our national team."
Others however seem a bit more worried about the match.
"I'm going to watch it in a sport bar and I hope that our team will win. But we should better keep our fingers crossed!" said another fan, Maya.
The support for Guus Hiddink is huge however and the nation fully expects him to deliver.
Russia star Andrei Arshavin has been a revelation at Euro 2008 and he is expected to play a key role in the match.
He was suspended for the game against Spain at the start of the tournament, when Russia were defeated 4-1.
Since then however he has gone on to score against both Sweden and the Netherlands and is set to be the star of the tournament.
Certainly the support of a nation is behind him and the national team.
Come Thursday evening the streets of Moscow will be filled with thousands of football fans, many gathering at sports bars to watch the big match.
A total of four-thousand policemen will be on duty ensuring security and protecting public order.
