Donald Trump has won the presidential election, taking to the stage in Florida to declare victory in an address to the nation.

The Republican said he had won an “unprecedented and powerful mandate”, having been widely projected sweep through the swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan in a landslide.

The 78-year-old, currently nine votes over the 270 electoral college vote threshold, is also on course to become the first Republican to win the popular vote since George W. Bush in 2004.
